Destination 2050 Adopted: Charting the Future of Transportation in the Houma-Thibodaux Region

The Houma-Thibodaux Metropolitan Planning Organization (HTMPO), staffed by South Central Planning and Development Commission (SCPDC), is proud to announce the official adoption of the Destination 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP). This long-range, multimodal plan outlines the region’s transportation vision for the next 25 years and serves as a blueprint for how we move—today and tomorrow.

🚦 A Regional Roadmap Built on Community Input

The plan reflects more than just numbers and projections—it’s built on the voices of our residents, stakeholders, and local governments. Through three rounds of outreach involving surveys, public meetings, and open-house events, over 1,300 people contributed to shaping the goals and priorities of this plan . Key community priorities included:
  • Improving safety for all users
  • Reducing congestion
  • Maintaining roads in good condition
  • Expanding access for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users

🧭 What’s in the Plan?

Destination 2050 outlines major transportation goals including:
  • Reliable and multimodal travel options
  • Safety, resiliency, and system maintenance
  • Economic support through improved freight and access
  • Environmental stewardship and community protection
The plan includes a staged improvement program and a fiscally constrained project list, with over $4.4 billion in projected transportation investment through 2050. Highlights include:
  • $2.7 billion for capital improvements
  • $1.5 billion for operations and maintenance
  • Over $43 million for pedestrian and bike infrastructure
  • Projects targeting roadway widening, intersection redesign, freight bottlenecks, public transit support, and more .

🌉 From Vision to Implementation

By adopting Destination 2050, our region now has a federally compliant plan that positions us to compete for state and federal infrastructure funds, including grants under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The plan directly supports national goals under 23 CFR 450 and includes extensive environmental screening to ensure responsible implementation .

🚍 A Team Effort

The success of this plan is thanks to broad collaboration—with local governments, LADOTD, FHWA, FTA, and the engaged public. Special thanks go to our HTMPO Policy Committee, Technical Advisory Committee, and the SCPDC planning team who helped translate community input into clear transportation priorities and actionable strategies.
