ST. JOHN THE PARISH LOUISIANA
St. John the Baptist Parish was created in 1807 as one of the original 19 parishes after the Louisiana Purchase. The parish bounded by Lafourche and St. Charles Parishes on the south, St. James Parish on the west, Tangipahoa Parish on the north and St. Charles Parish on the east. The parish is bisected by the Mississippi River. The area to the west and south of the Mississippi River is located in the Barataria Basin, but on the north and east side of the river, the parish is part of the Pontchartrain Basin. The parish was named after St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, which is located in Edgard. The parish land area is approximately 213 square miles.
