ASSUMPTION PARISH LOUISIANA
Assumption Parish was established on March 31, 1807 as one of the 19 original Louisiana civil parishes. Today its land area covers approximately 339 square miles. The parish is bounded by Terrebonne and St. Mary Parishes on the south, Iberia and St. Martin Parishes on the west, Iberville and Ascension Parishes to the north, and St. James and Lafourche Parishes on the east. It is bisected by Bayou Lafourche, which was at one time a major distributary of the Mississippi River, but was dammed off from the river in 1903 to prevent flooding. The Parish was named for the Festival of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While the parish is located in the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary region, it also borders the Atchafalaya Basin.
